Is it Worth Fixing my Old Computer, or Should I Buy a New One?

With the rise of technology, twenty-first-century life is dependent on computers. They play an important role in helping us with daily activities.

Computers promote communication and enable education. Along with this, they provide a platform for online shopping and an easy way to store important data and information. For any business, the computer plays a vital role in developing and promoting their business demands.

Every individual now relies on technology. Have you ever been in a situation where your computer requires service and maintenance? Or your computer is not performing according to your expectations? These are situations you don’t want.

You might be asking yourself whether you should buy a new computer or look at repairing your old one. This decision requires proper analysis of the situation before determining which option is best.

Computers can suffer from many issues and, most of the time, people do not find a solution to deal with them. They think that the only solution is to replace it with a new one. Before buying a new computer and throwing away your old one, why not attempt to repair it?

Firstly, check some of the basic things that are easy to fix, such as servicing the computer to get it back to its running form.

Even if you find that the fault is beyond your abilities, there will always be someone who can help you and offer their expertise. However, the next question is:  is it easier to maintain the computer or simply replace it?

Maintaining the old computer is the optimal choice rather than buying a new one. You will not only save money, but you will also learn how to deal with the problems should they arise again. To keep your computer in top running condition, here are two suggestions:

1. Upgrade the Solid-State Drive (SSD)

The main reason why your old laptop is slow is that it runs on a traditional hard drive, not an SSD. Upgrading your SSD is the most effective way to increase your computer’s performance.

Moving Windows OS / Mac OS from a standard hard drive to a solid-state drive helps your PC run faster. If you are frustrated with the very slow performance, an SSD and RAM upgrade are the best solutions to go with. Apart from the SSD upgrade, all other solutions are a waste of time and money.

2. Upgrade the Random-Access Memory (RAM)

Adding more RAM to your laptop helps you to do multiple tasks at once. So, your laptop will not be slow if you have multiple tabs open.

Adding memory (RAM) to your old computer can instantly make your computer faster, increase system responsiveness, and make multitasking seamless.

Sometimes maintaining your old computer is the better option - for example, if you have a very old computer that does not allow you to increase RAM beyond 4GB.

Some old computers cannot download Windows 10, so you are left with Windows 7 to run. Moreover, nobody will buy this computer from you, If you decide to sell

If you frustrated with the very slow performance with no upgrade options. One alternative is to install Linux on it. Linux is a very powerful operating system, and it is free. Software that is used for Linux is also readily available.

Installing Linux on your computer will allow you to send e-mails and browse the Internet more quickly. Although its user interface is not as user friendly as windows, it is an excellent solution for old computers. If you don’t want to spend money on a new computer, I would highly recommend that you check out Linux as an alternative.

Conclusion:

In short, the decision to buy a new computer or repair the older one depends on why you use your computer. Both options have advantages and disadvantages. Personally, I think you should try and attempt repairing the old computer. If it is not too expensive and you think its usage will be restored, get it repaired. Otherwise, buy a new one.

Alternatively, suppose you want to get some life out from your old computer or use it for regular use and low requirement games. In that case, fixing the old computer is a good option.

Moreover, some people end up buying a computer that is simply the same as their old one. To avoid this, you will need to invest between $1500 -$2500 for an intel i7 processor with a minimum of 8GB RAM containing SSD storage. If you can afford this, buying a new computer would be a better option.
